THE TOYOTA SUPRA: FROM GT CRUISER TO ICON
1993 · Toyota · 6 min
The fourth-generation Supra's legendary 2JZ engine made it the car a whole generation dreamed of.
THE EVOLUTION
The Supra began as a six-cylinder Celica variant in the late 1970s, then grew into a standalone grand tourer through four generations.
THE 2JZ
The heart of the A80 Supra was the 2JZ-GTE twin-turbo straight-six, officially rated at 276 hp under Japan's guidelines but famously capable of far more once tuned.
Its over-engineered iron block made it one of the most tuneable engines ever produced, and a fixture of drag racing and drifting.
THE LEGACY
Pop culture and motorsport turned the Supra A80 into a global icon. After an 17-year hiatus, the name returned in 2019 with the A90.
