THE R34: HOW ONE CAR DEFINED A GENERATION
1999 · Nissan · 7 min
Godzilla's final '90s form became a global icon through games, films and sheer onroad presence.
THE LINEAGE
The Skyline GT-R had been a touring-car legend since the Hakosuka of the late 1960s, and gained its 'Godzilla' nickname dominating Australian touring car racing in the early '90s.
THE MACHINE
The R34 (1999–2002) refined the formula: the RB26DETT twin-turbo straight-six, sophisticated ATTESA all-wheel drive, and a computer that could tune everything in real time.
On paper it quoted around 280 hp — the result of Japan's informal 'gentlemen's agreement' — but in reality it delivered far more.
THE LEGACY
Popular culture, from video games to films, turned the R34 into one of the most recognisable Japanese cars ever built. Its values have soared as a modern classic.
