THE LAMBORGHINI MIURA: THE FIRST SUPERCAR

1966 · Lamborghini · 6 min

A transverse V12 mounted behind the driver — the Miura invented the modern supercar layout.

THE IDEA

In the mid-1960s, a team of young Lamborghini engineers — working largely after hours — sketched a radical mid-engined road car with a V12 mounted sideways behind the driver.

Ferruccio Lamborghini, focused on grand tourers, was reluctant. But the car was far too good to ignore.

THE MACHINE

Unveiled at the 1966 Geneva show, the Miura stunned the world and effectively created the modern supercar template. Its 3.9-litre V12 and breathtaking looks made it the poster car of its age.
